PHARMA LOGISTICS AND BUSINESS CONTINUITY
Biobanks are infrastructures ensuring the conservation of biological samples or Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API). Biobanks have organizational and operational characteristics and may vary from one structure to another. Although there is currently no definition by consensus, it is recognized that the biggest cost in institutional or pharmaceutical biobanks is related to infrastructure and administration. Indeed, significant capital investment is required to build the site to maintain the stability of sample storage (building, emergency generators, access control, fire prevention, etc.) and thus ensure the continuity of activities in case of disaster.
With the high expectations in terms of medical and pharmaceutical compliance, it is also necessary to have the administrative and logistical staff to carry out all the operations and the monitoring of the cold chain, as well as precise handling of stored items.
RISK MANAGEMENT
BrainGenetics is a new infrastructure that provides storage space for all freezer systems. They are hosted in a highly secure datacenter with the highest certification in terms of resilience. These spaces are electrically controlled and climatically monitored 24×365. They have spare freezers in case of technical problems.
A secure off-site hosting is an interesting option against the problems of business continuity in a pharmaceutical chain, in life tech researches or food production.
COST REDUCTION
The objective is to bring all these facilities in one place to drastically reduce the operating costs of stored items. The associated services, such as logistics and IT systems, can also be shared. By having standardized processes, it will be also easier to provide reports for medical or pharmaceutical certifications (GxP or SwissMedic). The cost of a backup biobank can also be balanced by reductions in insurance’s costs or reduced risk factors during certifications.
